My favorite way to keep Christ in Christmas is by simply reading through the story of Jesus' birth in the Bible.  It helps me quickly remember what the season is all about and reminds me of the personality of Christ.  The fact that God chose for Jesus to be born in such humble circumstances is encouraging for me and reminds me of the unique and unexpected ways that He often works.

Merry Christmas!

We also make sure to read Luke 2 with our kids at Christmas, but I'd love to hear ideas about how to make Christmas *more* Christ-centered. The last few years, we've read from the Bible and prayed to thank God for the gift of Jesus. But then it's "present time". And it's clear that the kids are barely hanging on, barely listening at all to a thing that comes before the presents.

I don't want to over-react or over-analyze; Christmas is always a fun day for the kids and a special day for the family. But at the same time, I'd LOVE to hear anyone's ideas about how to help keep the gift of Christ front-and-center with the kids.

Any ideas?

Hi Beedle,

is it an idea to work through the story of Christmas in the days before Christmasday? So that at the very day of Christmas itself they can look forward to the gifts, to open them and to enjoy that time you have together. After all the gifts have been opened, or maybe even next day, go back to the greatest gift ever: Jesus! Let them see how you enjoyed to see their happy reaction to the gift that you gave. Let them know that God the Father also rejoices in us when we give a warm welcome to His Son...  Anyway, dont let the message of Christmas get lost in the material gifts, then you can better separate the timing of the message from the timing of giving the gifts. It worked for me and my family. Tell them the Christmasstory in July, or whenever throughout the Year, make sure that they know that you can celebrate Jesus birth at any day, once they have invited Him into their lifes!! I always try to think of something different for my kids to show them the story of the life of Jesus, and to teach them that it is not a matter of holidays or Sundays that we think of Jesus, but that it is a way of life throughout the year, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Blessings for you and your family!!

I love to decorate my home for the holidays, but  about 15 years ago I took Santa Claus out of all my Christmas decorations, cards, etc. I got rid of all that.  I place a large nativity in my living room that is just as noticeable as my Christmas tree, and place other indications  of the true meaning of Christmas throughout my home.

I only send religious Christmas cards since then.  I buy only the Christmas stamps that are religious ones.  On the back of each envelope, I write "Jesus...the Reason for the Season" for all to see.

I take a nativity to work to place on my desk as well as a coffee cup that boldly proclaims  "Jesus...the reason for the season".

I hang a special Christmas stocking just for Jesus.  It is a beautiful stocking with the nativity pictured on it.  Every year I write down on a piece of paper, my personal gift to the Lord for the coming year.  The first year my gift was to start reading my bible every day, not missing a single day.  I had not been faithful to do that before then.  I come up with something different each year that I give the Lord.

On Christmas Day I listen to the Christmas story from the volume of the bible I have on cassette tape and CD. I always invite family and friends for Christmas dinner and I prepare a special prayer just for the ocassion.  That is the closest that some come to going to church or reading the bible.   I invite them to attend our choir's special musical at Christmas as well.  Some go, some do not.  But I at least invite them.

One way that I remember impacting other people is what happens during my Rotary Club's project at our local Wal-Mart SuperCenter. We ring the bells at the Salvation Army kettles every December. The checkout clerks in the store only say "Happy Holidays", but we are free to say "Merry Christmas", and we have received a lot of positive comments about that. Lots of people really seem distressed about the "happy holidays" trend.

...but you have to give Wal-Mart some credit. They don't have to allow us to hold our program on their property.

God bless you, and remind you to keep Christ in Christmas.

Greg
